Cosplay on a Budget

This blog is going to be a record of ways to save money on cosplay, whether it is wigs, props or costumes themselves. There will be posts about my personal savings as well as highlighting good deals around the internet and the occasional tutorial. (If you have any requests about costumes, wigs, or props, or questions about them, please send me an Ask and I will try my hardest to help you out!)

The Midnight Crew Zentai Face (Homestuck)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lycra-spandex-Zentai-Black-all-hood-mask-/250872217530?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item80110825b4

The link about is a listing on ebay for a black zentai hood for your face. The totally cost, including free shipping, is about $12.99. This is a fantastic alternative to buying an entire zentai suit if you want to cosplay a member of the Midnight Crew. All you would need to complete the look would be a pair of black satin gloves and you’re good to go, in terms of their black skin!

The Felt’s Hats (Homestuck)

(oof! I haven’t updated in forever!)

But here’s a special update to help if anyone is cosplaying any members of The Felt from Homestuck! Now, this really depends on the store, but in Party City today, they had a massive amount of green felt hats in all sorts of styles that would work fantastic for some of the Felt members. And since St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, they don’t cost an arm and a leg!

Submissions are open~

That’s right folks! Submissions are now open! Have a budget-friendly cosplay tip or a money-saving tutorial you’d like to share? Have you find the -perfect- wig that won’t break the bank? Feel free to submit your stories as well!

Hetalia Military Uniforms (Axis Powers Hetalia)

Hetalia is a series that seems to have a lot of room open for original and different outfits for the nations. Sometimes, you might want to do a military uniform for the nation you’ll be cosplaying. And for that, I highly recommend going to a Salvation Army thrift store (but any other thrift stores will do) Things like this:

This was either an authentic of very realistic military uniform I picked up for about $5, (it was a set) If you just take the time and really look around, you can find amazing things like this. I’ve also found khaki uniforms, (which I used for Spain/Egypt) and you can sometimes even find large, tan coats (for Russia)

All in all, take a trip down to your local thrift store(s) and take a peek around, you never know what you will find.

Grell Ribbon (Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler)

Ever have a hard time finding Grell’s iconic red-white stripped ribbon? Never fear!

Grell Ribbon (few stripes) - $0.99 (plus $0.88 shipping)

Grell Ribbon (more stripes) - $1.25 (FREE shipping)

Easy, simple, and cheap!

Nurse Mask (Silent Hill)

Now, online, there are tons of ways to make these, but here’s an inexpensive way to make a mask!

It’s a simple paper mache project. I started with measuring the circumference of my head. Add an inch to whatever it comes out to be and inflate a balloon until the widest part of it matches the measurement. Get a pile of old newspapers, a cup of water, a plastic face mask that comfortably fits your face, a stand for the balloon (tied end facing downward) and some regular flour. Mix the flour and water to make a waste, but not too watery, find the right balance. Attach the face mask to the balloon securely enough to that it will stay when you apply the paper. It should finish looking like this:

I molded mine to have a flatter brow/top of head, so that I could place the nurse hat on top easier. If you’re curious about how you’re going to be able to breathe, I will be addressing this later on. But now, it’s time to paint! After letting the mask mold dry, (this may take 24 - 48 hours depending on how thick you laid the paper mache on) get a mixture of gray acrylic paint and generic fake blood and begin to gently paint over the newspaper.

Like this! It gives it a lovely, almost burn-victim skin, texture and all. It makes a good base for the bandages. Here’s what it looked like when it was on:

Now, this method to actually GET the mask on is a little tricky. When the paint is all dry, CAREFULLY deflate the balloon inside and begin to cut the back open of the mask. DO NOT CUT TOO MUCH! You need to cut enough to be able to comfortably fit your head in without discomfort and to still have SOME back of the head. The next step will involve two types of bandages as well as tea-staining and paper mache. You will need about two or three rolls of ACE bandage, the stretchy kind sometimes used in crossplay binding. Carefully, you will be wrapping the head up with these bandages, painting the bandages with a thin layer of paper mache in order to stick and give it an eerie look. The next set of bandages are thin, cotton gauze rolls, about three. I suggest putting them in a bowl or glass of BROWN tea, (not coffee) and letting them dye and soak in the color. I suggest doing this when you’re first making your mask base, because it can take a while for the color to seep in. Once they are the color you desire, carefully wrap them over the ACE bandage base, wrapping them tightly, but not enough to damage or warp the mask, securing them with a dab of paper mache at the ends. I must make a note and suggest you do NOT wrap across where your nostrils are! This will make the next step difficult to do! Here’s what the mask should look like now:

Now, this next part will be a little tricky. I had to take an exacto-knife to the inside of the mask to free up the eye slots. The above picture has them covered, but the allowed slots were not big enough. I will warn you, these masks are very difficult to see out of! But the effect is well worth it! Now onto the breathing situation. With the same exacto-knife, I went in and CAREFULLY!!!!! (I cannot stress the carefully enough, because it’s so easy to rip the gauze from the inside) cut out the entire nose frame from the mask inside, so that your own nose will replace it and fit in the gap. By removing the plastic mask’s nose, your own will have a spot to fit and your nostrils will be able to get air, so long as you did not wrap over them. Notice: If you have trouble breathing through your nose, I do not suggest this method! It can be hard to breathe at it is with normal breathing abilities. The mask should now look like this:

And now! The finished product! Carefully paint the mask with a combination of tea water, fake blood, and gray + brown acrylic craft paint. Make sure the mixture isn’t TOO watery, but enough to achieve the effect of bloodied bandages. The hat was made with a few sheets of craft foam, painted with gray + brown paint and a tiny dab of fake blood, then simply hot glued on. The final mask looks like this:

All in all, this mask took a while to make, but cost me under $20 to so do, and I get compliments all over from it. Just another way to have really cool cosplay on a budget!

Rainbow Dash Wig (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic)

Infamous Rainbow Dash wig! The bane of RD cosplayers everywhere! You -can- pay a ridiculous amount on the Cosplay.com Marketplace ($45 - $55) or worse, on etsy ($95!!) for a wig that nowhere near worth that price!

Theatre House Punk Rainbow Wig
The wig is a WHOPPING $16! (plus about $5 or $6 for shipping!) And I can tell you from experience that it is the exact same wig as the others being sold around the internet. Do not fall for the scam of people trying to make a quick buck on a popular fandom!

Troll Horns (Homestuck)

For some people, the horns can be some of the easiest or most difficult part of a Homestuck cosplay. I have a few things that can help some people out.

Now, most of the tutorials call for some type of clay, but these can get very messy and very heavy for the bigger horns. I find that using the combination of aluminum foil, masking tape and paint works wonders!

For starters, we will talk about Tavros horns.

The pictures are actually of my Tavros horns. They’re each about a foot long, and are pretty lightweight. They were made with a simple paper towel tube as the middle, which was wrapped with aluminum foil to make the shape of the horn. Finally, the foil was carefully wrapped with masking tape until no foil was visible and the horn was sturdy. It was then painted. The ends are (20589 Harvest Orange), the middles are (20764 Apricot) and the tips are (20502 Yellow) and the paint is Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint. My bathroom has a weird, orange color that makes pictures look weird, but the end result and the colors is quite stunning!

Total cost:under $10

  • Paper towel tube - free from the house
  • paint - just over $3
  • masking tape - two rolls, $1 each
  • aluminum foil - one roll, $1

I used a headband I found at a dollar store to attach them too!

Now, onto Gamzee and Aradia horns. These can be a little more tricky, but I have found two horn bases that work pretty well and are really inexpensive!

Hellion Horns - GAMZEE

Demon Horns - ARADIA

As you can see, these horns have the same shape as the listed trolls’ horns. The step to “Homestucking” them would be very simple: Wrapping the base horns up in masking tape and painting them with the paint mentioned above. Not to mention these base horns are very cheap and have a great shape to them.

Dave Strider Shirts (Homestuck)

For anyone interested in getting a red-white baseball shirt for Dave Strider, rather than buying an official shirt or finding one at a ridiculous price, might I suggest a shirt from:

Epic Sports

The shirt start at about $7 - $8 plus shipping, which is still a much better deal than $20+ for a shirt.

Here are some other brands, organized from lowest to highest price! Now keep in mind, these are just on Google’s Shopping. You can find some on ebay as well, or if you’re extremely lucky, at a thrift store near you!
